Set in Arizona – Phoenix, “The Valley,” although the city is never named. But Bernie hates what he sees happening in the Valley; the endless development, and worries about the aquifer running dry. In this book, he’s mad at Susie because he thinks she’s gone back to her L.A. boyfriend. He discovers the boyfriend in Susie’s apartment with another woman – his fiance – who he brought to town to meet Susie and to go on a double date with Susie and Bernie. “She’s crazy about you!” Glad they found her alive in that basement.
