Marley & Me*

by John Grogan, 2005

*Life and love with the world’s worst dog

Loved this book! It’s a memoir describing John Grogan’s early adulthood, getting a yellow lab puppy, meeting his wife, raising this yellow lab who is the world’s worst dog, finding a home, having children, and all the while growing up with this dog.  I finished the book while we were camping up in Tom Bennett Campground near Pingree Park. Wayne was off fishing and our old dog, Tank, and I were in camp together, just the two of us, as was often the case. The ending describes how Marley, who is now the world’s most beloved dog, is old and can hardly walk. He can’t do stairs anymore and the fur is gone on his elbows. Just broke down and sobbed the last 30 minutes, because he so perfectly describes a beloved old dog who is dying. Our old dog, Tank, was 13 at the time and only lasted another year. This book was wonderful. However, the movie was horrible and a huge disappointment! No richness or depth of feeling, just pretty faces and a cute dog.
