The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

by C.S. Lewis, 1952

Eustace, Lucy, and Edmund get sucked into a picture in Eustace’s house of a ship at sea, back to Narnia, where Prince Caspian is at sea on the Dawn Treader. He rescues them and they go with him and his crew in search of 7 Lords that Miraz sent off to explore the unknown Eastern Sea.

  1. First they went to the Lone Islands. Landed on Felimath and pirates were there and kidnapped them to sell as slaves. Caspian gets bought by one of the 7 lords, Lord Bern, and they rescue the others and set those islands right. Lord Bern then is set in charge of them. Caspian makes him a Duke. The rest go on their journey, get caught at sea
  2. in a storm. Then land on another island. Eustace didn’t want to work in repairing the ship so goes off exploring and finds a dragon and his lair. The dragon is very old and dies. Eustace falls asleep on top of its gold and wakes up a dragon! It is that experience that brings him to Aslan and Aslan cures him. Removes his scales, and he’s a boy again. Much nicer now. They called that island Dragon Island and surmised that Lord Octesian died there.

3. Then they go to an island with a pool of water that turns anything that is dipped into it, to gold. They see a golden statue in the pool and discuss how to get it out when they discover this. They leave that island – calling it Goldwater but Reepicheep renames it Deathwater Island.

4. Then it’s on to yet another island where they hear voices but can’t see anyone. Lucy breaks the spell for the Monopods, who used the Magician’s Book to find a spell to make them invisible because the Magician had “uglified” them. Only a little girl could break the spell by reading from the Book. They ended up calling them the Dufflepuds. Aslan helped Lucy, was there with her all the time. The Magician is Coriakin, an old star sent to the island to rule these dumb creatures.

5. Next, it’s to the Dark Island, a nightmarish place where they sale into a black hole, rescue a screaming, wild man, and he tells them this is the island where dreams, meaning nightmares, come true. They try to find their way back to the light but not until Lucy prays to Aslan for help. He sends an albatross to guide them back to the light. The man they picked up was Lord Rhoop.

6. They went on their voyage. The sea and everything got more and more beautiful. They land at another island, find a huge table full of food and 3 sleeping men with long hair and beards. (They are the last 3 lords.) They can’t wake them. They meet a beautiful woman and her Father, who come from a door in a hillside. They tell them what caused the 3 men to sleep and the only way to break the enchantment is to sale to the World’s End and come back leaving at least one of your company behind. That is Reepicheep’s heart’s desire.

They leave Ramandu’s and his daughter’s island. Lord Rhoop is coaxed off the boat to stay there. They put him to sleep with the other 3 lords at Aslan’s Table, to wait for the rest of them to return. This is the only cure for his nightmares.

They sale the Last Sea to Aslan’s Country. The sea water is so clear and Lucy can see to the bottom. She sees Sea People. Reepicheep jumps in to fight them and discovers it’s fresh water. The water is so good they don’t need to eat. They sail in a current that takes them straight to Aslan’s country. Before they get there they run into a wall of water, only glimpses of what’s beyond – so beautiful – mountains so high – “But these were warm and green and full of forests and waterfalls however high you looked.” Reepicheep gets in his little boat and sales up and over the tall wave never to be seen again. Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace go home. Lucy and Edmund never to return to Narnia. Eustace a changed boy.
